Support this project: Securing protection of Kayapó Indigenous Territories in the Brazilian Amazon

How your money will be used

This is our biggest and most costly program but one with an extremely attractive benefit/cost ratio. Your donation will help Kayapó conserve 11-million hectares of continuous Amazonian forest — an area of very high biodiversity conservation value and incalculably high "ecosystem services" value, especially through climate regulation.

More funds will help us increase our support for the equipment, fuel, other provisions, and occasional overflights needed by the Kayapó to conduct surveillance of their land and extensive borders. The Kayapó live a traditional lifestyle, fishing, hunting, gathering wild food, cultivating garden plots, and making their own buildings and equipment. Their ongoing protection of their lands has resulted in a vast "continent" of tropical forest in a region undergoing deforestation and colonization for cattle ranching and other agriculture.

We thus have a built-in conservation force for this huge reserve and in enabling their continued protection efforts we are both helping preserve a crucial component of the Amazonian forest and helping Kayapó to preserve their cultural heritage and way of life.
