| Support this project: | Conservation of elephants in the Gourma region of Mali |
How your money will be usedInitiated in June 2010, this effort will span a number of years and is unquestionably necessary for the long-term survival of Mali's remarkable population of desert elephants. Numbering an estimated 350-700 in 2004, this most northerly population of elephants is accorded a high priority in the regional elephant strategy of the World Conservation Union. Your donation will go toward the costs of carrying out project activities. These include salaries of our two key personnel, travel costs, supporting intercommunal and community conventions (agreements that form local laws), training workshops and surveillance and fire brigades. Outside funding has been obtained for: (1) boreholes and cisterns at the relocation site for small communities who are voluntarily relocating from Lake Banzena, which is essential habitat for the elephants late in the dry season and will be reserved for elephants; and (2) awareness and educational outreach campaigns, which are necessary to the success of this effort. Project objectives were based on earlier studies of elephant ecology, migration, and human interactions in Mali. Our approach of heavily involving local communities and using their process of intercommunal and community conventions to protect elephant habitat and minimize human/elephant conflicts is proving exemplary. The work is cost effective and we are fortunate to have experienced and highly capable personnel to carry it out. Fortunately, our project has been unaffected by the Tuareg rebel activity in northern Mali and by the recent military coup. Contributions will be gratefully accepted for this project. You can play a part in ensuring the future for the desert elephants of Mali. |
