Conservation of the Maleo and of marine turtles in the Tompotika area of Sulawesi, Indonesia

How your money will be used

Your donation will support programs to conserve Sulawesi's endangered iconic bird species, the maleo, and to protect nesting marine turtles. Both marine turtles and the maleo faced population declines in the Tompotika area resulting from rampant harvesting of eggs by local people.

Our partner in Sulawesi is the Alliance for Tompotika Conservation (AlTo), a small organization with an American director and local staff and volunteers that has accomplished an amazing amount (at very low cost) in its first four years.

Ongoing community education has effectively raised awareness about conservation of Sulawesi's wonderful natural heritage, and pride in the protection of maleo and sea turtles. Local conservation staff and volunteers ensure that nesting areas are protected, and guarded against poachers.

Thousands of turtle hatchlings and hundreds of adult turtles have been saved since beginning the program. Over 7000 maleo eggs have been saved, and the number of adult maleos returning to nest in the area has tripled. Poaching has been almost completely eliminated.

Any funds above those needed to maintain the existing program would be used towards future goals of expanding educational programs and identifying additional nesting areas. This program is scalable, such that the more funds are received the more widely the conservation successes achieved in Tompotika can be replicated elsewhere throughout Sulawesi.
